Also known as Gorge Walking, this is an exhilarating, challenging activity.
Over the last couple of years this sport has increased in popularity, and with many exciting gorges to choose from, with waterfalls, pools and stunning scenery, it is easy to see why.
Ghyll Scrambling refers to walking and climbing up or down a river flow, staying within the water course. The challenge is to push against the water and climb over the obstacles that it has created. The word ‘ghyll’ describes a narrow stream of water; it is this which we scramble or climb up.
We offer Ghyll Scrambling in the Lake District and have a choice of venues depending on whether you would like to climb up or jump down. There is always something to suit all ages and abilities. Whether you are a family looking for a quality day out together, a group of adults looking for an adrenalin challenge or a school group – we have something that is suitable.
We provide all equipment including a good quality waterproof top layer, and all the necessary safety and technical equipment. We invest in good quality equipment that is well maintained and renewed regularly. Our experienced guides will ensure you have a fantastic experience. We work on small instructor:participant ratios and our team of staff are nationally qualified, experienced and skilled.
We can advise on suitable venues, clothing, accommodation and anything else required to ensure that your activity runs smoothly. Depending on your group and the ghyll that you do, you may be able to combine this with another activity such as canoeing or rock climbing. We have put together a short video on one of the ghyll scrambles that we offer, which is on Stickle Ghyll in the Langdales, Lake District.
